Honda S2000 Airbag Warning Light: Common Fixes & Causes

Hey everyone! My 2008 Honda S2000 has been showing an airbag warning light lately. The diagnostic scan shows a fault in the airbag system. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Would really appreciate hearing about repair experiences and what exactly needed fixing. Looking to understand the common causes before taking it to the shop.

Hey! I've got some experience working on cars as a hobby mechanic. Had a similar issue with my 2006 Honda Civic, and I feel your pain with that airbag light! My light came on and stayed on, turned out the airbag control module was faulty. Since it's a safety component, I didn't want to mess with it myself, took it straight to my trusted mechanic. Luckily, it was covered under Honda's extended warranty for airbag components, so didn't cost me anything. Just curious, have you noticed any other warning lights or strange behavior? Also, do you have the specific error code from the diagnostic scan? That would really help narrow down if it's similar to what I experienced. Those S2000s are sweet rides, by the way! Would love to help you get this sorted out safely.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've had mine regularly serviced (last one was just 2 months ago) and this is the first time I'm seeing this warning light. No other warning lights or unusual behavior, thankfully. I've got the diagnostic code written down somewhere, will check and get back to you on that. Just to clarify, my S2000 is at 60803 KM and has been running great otherwise. Really hope it's just a sensor issue like yours was. Definitely planning to get it checked by a professional since it's safety-related. Good to know about the possible warranty coverage, I'll look into that before heading to the shop. Did your mechanic mention how long the repair typically takes? I use this as my daily driver, so I'm trying to plan ahead.

Hey again! Thanks for the extra details about your S2000. Makes sense that you want to know about the repair timeline, totally get that, especially since it's your daily driver. When I had my Civic fixed, the whole process took about a day and a half. The repair itself wasn't super long, around 4-5 hours, but they had to order the new control module first. I was lucky that they had a loaner car available, which helped a lot. Since your mileage is pretty low (mine was almost double that when I had the issue), and you've kept up with regular maintenance, it might just be a sensor thing like you mentioned. My mechanic actually told me these issues are fairly common in Hondas from our era, even with good maintenance. One tip though, while you're looking up the diagnostic code, check if your VIN is listed under any airbag-related recalls. That's actually how I found out about the warranty coverage on mine. Would be great if you could catch a break like I did! Let me know what that diagnostic code says when you find it. I've still got my repair paperwork somewhere, and I can check if it matches what I had done.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! I just found the diagnostic code, it's B1B01. Really appreciate the heads up about checking for recalls too. Just looked up my VIN and surprisingly, there is an open recall for the airbag system! Can't believe I got this lucky. I'll definitely call the dealership tomorrow to schedule the repair. Good to know about the timeline, I'll ask about a loaner car when I make the appointment. A day and a half isn't too bad, especially if it's covered under recall. You've been super helpful with sharing your experience. Makes me feel much better about getting this sorted out. I'll update you once I get it fixed, might help someone else dealing with the same issue in the future!
