Honda Stream communication error

Alright, gearheads. I'm pulling my hair out here. My 2000 Honda Stream (gasoline engine, naturally) is throwing a communication error I can't nail down. Mileage is clocking in at 180552 km. The check engine light is on, the engine's overheating like mad – I'm even seeing coolant leaking under the car after a drive, like the system is way over-pressurized. I'm suspecting a dodgy cable or plug somewhere in the control unit system since this started suddenly. Anyone seen anything like this before? I plugged it into the diagnostic tool myself but could not see a solution.

Summary of the thread

A 2000 Honda Stream was experiencing a communication error, overheating, and coolant leakage, suspected to be due to a faulty cable or plug in the control unit system. The issue was challenging to diagnose independently, leading to a recommendation to check connectivity points like the data link connector and wiring harness. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by a certified workshop that identified and fixed a faulty connector, resolving the communication error and overheating issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I think I can help here. I’ve got a Honda Stream as well, although it's a later model, and experienced similar symptoms – though without the coolant leak. For me, the check engine light was the first sign something was going wrong. I also had diagnostic trouble codes pointing to a control unit issue. Have you checked all the usual connectivity suspects, like the data link connector and the wiring harness? It might be useful to have a look there!

Right on, thanks for the info! When you say 'connectivity suspects,' were there any specific plugs or wiring areas that gave you trouble? I am starting to suspect it is going to the workshop - but I want to figure it out myself.

Okay, let me clarify. While I inspected the connectors and wiring, I didn’t find the root cause myself. Ultimately, tracing the fault became too difficult and I took it to a trusted workshop. I can only recommend you do the same. Communication faults involving control units can be tricky and require specialized diagnostic equipment.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it a lot. I brought it to a certified workshop. Luckily they found a faulty connector that was causing a miscommunication within the control unit network. They sorted it out for 95€, and the overheating issues seem to be gone. Problem solved!
