HVAC climate control panel failure

My Mercedes S Klasse diesel built in 2001 has a dead climate control panel. The mileage is 26680 km. I'm getting an error code, the heat output is weak, and the AC won't turn on. I suspect it's an electrical issue, maybe a bad connector or wire. Could it be a defective cable or plug connection? Has anyone else had this?

That sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old BMW 5 series, although the symptoms weren't exactly the same. The control panel would flicker intermittently. Did you check the power supply to the control panel itself? A bad ground or a loose connection in the wiring harness could definitely cause these kinds of problems. Have you inspected the electrical connectors for corrosion or damage? It could be a simple fix if it's just a loose connection. The HVAC system is quite complex and a faulty control panel could throw all sorts of errors.

Good point about the power supply. Where should I put my multimeter to check that? Are there specific pins or connectors I should be checking? Also, what's the best way to get to the electrical connectors without taking apart the entire dashboard?

I do not know the exact pins you would need to check, but I recall that locating the relevant wiring diagrams are key for pinpointing the power supply wires. As for accessing the connectors, on the BMW, I could gently pry the trim pieces around the control panel. However, considering the potential complexity, and the cost of further troubleshooting, have you considered taking it to a reputable workshop? The repair cost was 95€ and could save you time and potential headaches.

Thanks for the tip! You were right about the electrical connectors. I took it to the shop, and it turned out to be a corroded connector in the wiring harness, just like you thought. They cleaned it, and everything's working now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
