Hybrid Countryman Gear Shift Problems

Okay, I'm officially losing it with my hybrid Countryman. The gear shift indicator on the speedometer is completely dead. Can't see what gear I'm in, and the whole gearbox is acting nuts. Slipping, unclean shifts, even some grinding noises. Error memory says something about a defective control unit. Anyone seen this before? Estimate to fix is around 1000€. Is it likely a goner?

Summary of the thread

The hybrid Countryman is experiencing gear shift problems, including a dead gear shift indicator, slipping, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. The error memory suggests a defective control unit as the cause. A similar issue in another Mini model was resolved by replacing the faulty control unit, which is likely the solution here. After replacing the control unit, the gear shift issues were resolved, confirming the diagnosis.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Whoa, sounds rough! I had something similar happen in my older Mini, a Cooper. The gear selector was acting all kinds of wonky. Is the gear indicator in the car dashboard just blank or is it showing the wrong gear? Does it happen all the time, or just when the engine is hot or cold? Have you tried checking the basics like the battery voltage or any obvious loose connections around the gear shift knob?

The gear indicator is just blank, totally dead. Happens all the time, hot or cold. Battery seems fine. What exactly went wrong with your Cooper's gear shift, and what did they do to fix it?

Yep, that sounds REALLY familiar. With my Cooper, the whole issue stemmed from a faulty control unit. The gear selector itself was fine, but the computer wasn't getting the right signals. Given that your gear indicator is blank and you're getting shifting problems, I'd bet money it's the same thing. Honestly, you're probably looking at a trip to the workshop for a replacement. Don't mess with it yourself unless you REALLY know what you're doing.

Dude, you nailed it! Turns out it WAS the control unit. Local shop confirmed it, swapped it out, and now my Countryman shifts like butter. The gear shift indicator on the car dashboard is finally working again! Cost me around the price you estimated. Thanks a million for the heads-up!
