Hyundai i30 Engine Issues: Unpredictable Behavior, Increased Fuel Consumption and Possible Faulty Air Mass Sensor
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Hyundai i30 is experiencing unpredictable engine behavior, including shutting off, losing power, shuddering during acceleration, and increased fuel consumption, accompanied by a check engine light and black smoke. The suspected cause is a faulty air mass sensor, which can affect fuel efficiency and performance by sending incorrect data to the car's computer. Replacing the sensor has been suggested as a solution, as it resolved similar issues in another vehicle, restoring normal operation and fuel consumption.

Hey there sounds like a rough rodeo with that Hyundai i30 of yours. Dealt with something similar with my car not too long ago. Dude above seems pretty on point. It's a total pain, but it's gotta be fixed. So, I'm just curious and it would be super helpful for future reference, do you remember how much this set you back? And since you got it sorted, did any other bugs pop up or has sailing been smooth?

Hey, you're absolutely right, it was a bumpy ride with my Elantra, but thankfully, it's all been smooth sailing since the repair. And yeah, on the cash front, it wasn't exactly a bargain. Knocked me back a bit, about 415 Euro to fix that pesky air mass sensor. But I guess it's one of those things, you have to bite the bullet and fork out the cash if you want to keep your wheels spinning, right? As long as the job's done right, it's worth it in the long run. I mean, since that air mass sensor got sorted, my car's been behaving like a good boy. Lights are off, the black smoke's gone and it's stopped drinking petrol like it's going out of fashion. So in my case, no new glitches have come upon since I got that issue fixed. Hope that helps and good luck with your Hyundai i30 - she'll be running like new again in no time.

Hey, good to know that your Elantra's been treating you right after the fix. That's some helpful info there! Yeah, honestly, I'm ready to shell out the 415 Euro if it means putting an end to this crazy annoying situation. My car's just been too thirsty lately and it’s hitting the pocket. Hoping not to face any new glitches post this, just like in your case. Appreciate your insight and the good wishes. Heading off to the garage this weekend to get this bug squashed. Fingers crossed!

Hey there, sounds like you're having a real headache with your i30. I got a 2016 Hyundai Elantra and I experienced pretty much the same issues. The check engine light started flickering, power would drop unusually, and it was guzzling gas like crazy. I also noticed that the car would stutter and shudder when I tried to accelerate, and it was frustrating. Took it to the local garage and turned out it was indeed the mass air flow sensor acting up. The symptoms were spot on, the black smoke, the uneven idling and reduced power. The mechanic explained how this little bugger can seriously affect the car’s fuel efficiency and overall performance if it sends the wrong data to the car's computer system. It wasn't a quick fix, they had to replace the faulty sensor completely. Despite it not being a part that you'd usually worry about, it was a serious enough issue and it made a lot of difference once it was sorted. Things got back to normal afterwards and my Elantra runs like a dream again now. So, you might be on the right track suspecting the mass air flow sensor. It’s worth getting it checked out properly. Good luck with it.
