Hyundai i40 Terminal 30 Error

My 2011 Hyundai i40, gasoline engine, is giving me grief. Only 25533 km on the clock! I'm getting a 'Terminal 30 continuous plus interrupted' error. Basically, it starts poorly, like the battery is totally dead. I've checked the obvious – battery connections are clean, but I suspect a short circuit. Could it be the ignition switch, a dodgy fuse box, or maybe a voltage drop somewhere?

Summary of the thread

A 2011 Hyundai i40 with low mileage is experiencing a 'Terminal 30 continuous plus interrupted' error, leading to poor starting as if the battery is dead. The issue may be caused by a short circuit, ignition switch problems, a faulty fuse box, or a voltage drop. A parasitic draw was suggested as a potential cause, and it was recommended to check the battery's resting voltage and inspect fuses and relays. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by replacing a heavily discharged and defective battery.

I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 Series, though the error code was slightly different. Suspect a parasitic draw somewhere in your system. Have you tested the battery's resting voltage after the car has been sitting overnight? A significant drop would indicate a drain. Check all fuses and relays meticulously.

Thanks for the tip! Battery voltage does drop overnight. When you say 'parasitic draw,' could that really cause this 'Terminal 30' thing? And which fuses in particular should I be checking, the main ones in the engine bay, or also the ones under the dash?

Yes, a parasitic draw can certainly cause that error. 'Terminal 30' generally refers to the continuous power supply, which the battery provides. A significant drain overnight is a strong indicator. Given the symptoms, I'd advise taking it to a workshop with the appropriate diagnostic equipment. Diagnosing electrical faults can be tricky without the right tools.

I appreciate the confirmation. I bit the bullet and took it to a local garage. Turns out, the battery was heavily discharged AND defective – go figure! New battery and a good check over sorted it. Cost me 290€ all in. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
