Hyundai ix35 engine losing power

Alright, I'm getting seriously frustrated! My 2010 Hyundai ix35 gasoline is playing up big time. It feels like it's lost half its power, the check engine light is mocking me, and the engine's running rough. Plus, it feels like I'm riding a bucking bronco when I try to accelerate. I've already chucked in new spark plugs, thinking it was a simple fix, but no dice. Any ideas before I set fire to the thing?

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Hyundai ix35 is experiencing significant power loss, rough engine performance, and an active check engine light. Initial attempts to resolve the issue by replacing spark plugs were unsuccessful. Potential causes discussed include a lean fuel mixture, carbon buildup in the throttle body, issues with the catalytic converter, EGR valve, or a defective oxygen sensor. The problem was ultimately identified as a faulty fuel injector, which was resolved by a professional mechanic.

I have an ix35 too, and your symptoms sound very familiar. Reduced engine power and rough running can indicate a lean fuel mixture. Have you checked the throttle body for carbon buildup, or perhaps considered issues with the catalytic converter or EGR valve? A defective oxygen sensor can also be a source of these problems.

Throttle body and EGR valve, you say? Hmmm, I haven't touched those. Are they easy enough to check myself, or am I risking making things even worse? And what about the catalytic converter – how would I even know if that's gone belly up?

While cleaning the throttle body is something you could attempt yourself with the right cleaner and a bit of care, diagnosing catalytic converter or EGR valve issues properly requires more specialized equipment. Given the symptoms, and the fact that new spark plugs didn't solve the problem, I suggest that you visit your local trusted workshop.

Okay, appreciate the advice! Took it to the shop, and you were spot on – turns out one of the fuel injectors was cactus. All sorted now, but cost me 515€! Still, at least it's running sweet again. Cheers!
