i10 brake fluid light and spongy pedal

Hi, I've got a 2010 Hyundai i10 diesel and I'm experiencing a worrying issue. The brake fluid warning light came on yesterday. I checked the reservoir and the level is definitely low. I've also noticed a strange feedback from the brake pedal when I press it. I'm thinking worn brakes, maybe? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Hyundai i10 diesel owner reported a brake fluid warning light and a spongy brake pedal. The low brake fluid level and pedal feedback suggested potential worn brakes. Another i10 owner shared a similar experience, attributing the issue to worn brake pads causing the pistons to extend further, thus requiring more fluid. The recommended solution was a thorough brake system inspection by a mechanic, which confirmed worn pads and rotors, leading to their replacement.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I also drive an i10, and I did encounter a similar issue a while back. Low brake fluid triggered the warning light, and the brake pedal felt spongy. Before topping up the fluid, have you checked for any visible leaks around the master cylinder, calipers, or brake lines?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't spotted any obvious leaks, but I'll definitely have another look in better light tomorrow. Was your issue also related to worn brake pads or something similar? How did you resolve it?

In my case, the low fluid was indeed due to worn brake pads. As the pads wear down, the pistons in the calipers extend further, requiring more fluid from the reservoir. If you're experiencing spongy brakes in addition to the low fluid level, I'd strongly recommend a thorough inspection of your entire brake system by a qualified mechanic. It might be time for a fluid replacement as well. My recommendation is taking it to the workshop.

Thanks so much for the advice! It seems like my initial thought about the worn brakes was on the right track. I took it to the workshop and you were spot on - worn pads and rotors. Cost me 480€ to get it all sorted. Appreciate the help!
