i20 automatic transmission defective parking position

Evening. My 2015 Hyundai i20, gasoline engine, is throwing a curveball. Mileage is at 75073 km. Seems I've got a defective parking position on the automatic transmission. The engine refuses to start, and the check engine light is illuminated. I've also noticed some gearbox slippage and unclean shifts recently. Hooked it up to a code reader, and there's an error stored in the memory. Could this be the control unit finally giving up? Anyone seen similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2015 Hyundai i20 with 75073 km is experiencing a defective parking position in its automatic transmission, preventing the engine from starting and triggering the check engine light. The issue may be linked to a faulty transmission range sensor, as indicated by a stored error code, which can cause gearbox slippage and unclean shifts. The problem might stem from the control unit or sensor, and a professional diagnostic at a workshop is recommended to identify and resolve the issue.

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms with my i20. Engine wouldn't start, check engine light was on, and the gearbox felt like it was fighting me. Did you notice any specific error codes when you scanned it? Have you tried checking the transmission fluid level?

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm getting a code related to the transmission range sensor. Fluid level seems okay, though it's difficult to say for sure without proper equipment. Could a faulty sensor really cause all these issues, including the car not starting at all?

A faulty transmission range sensor can definitely cause those symptoms. The car likely isn't starting because the control unit doesn't know what position the transmission is in, so it's preventing ignition as a safety measure. Given all the symptoms and the stored error, it does point towards a control unit or sensor issue. Best bet is to get it to a workshop for a proper diagnostic. They'll be able to pinpoint the exact cause and give you a definite answer.

Appreciate the confirmation. It's reassuring to know someone else has faced a similar headache. I'll get it booked into the workshop ASAP. Thanks again for the advice!
