i20 outside temperature sensor issue

I've got a 2008 Hyundai i20 diesel with about 83,000 km on it. I'm getting an error related to the outside temperature sensor. The air conditioning won't switch on, which is annoying, and I've noticed the spray nozzles froze up when it got really cold recently. Also, the mirror heating doesn't seem to be working. From what I've read, it could be a dodgy connection somewhere. Anyone else had this issue?

Summary of the thread

A 2008 Hyundai i20 owner reported an issue with the outside temperature sensor, affecting the air conditioning and mirror heating. The problem was suspected to be due to a faulty connection. It was suggested to check the wiring and plug connection to the sensor, located behind the front bumper. The owner later confirmed that a workshop identified a faulty sensor and corroded connector, resolving the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had something similar with my i20, though not exactly the same symptoms. If the car thinks it's super cold outside, it can mess with a bunch of systems. The ECU (Engine Control Unit - basically the car's brain) uses the outside temperature reading for things like adjusting the fuel mixture and controlling the AC. Have you checked the wiring and plug connection to the sensor itself? A bad connection there could definitely cause those issues.

Thanks for the tip! Where exactly is the outside temperature sensor located on the i20? And is there an easy way to check the wiring and plug without completely dismantling the front of the car? I'm not super experienced with car electrics.

On the i20, it's usually located behind the front bumper, near the fog light. It's often quite exposed to road spray and general grime. As for checking it, you'll likely need to get under the car. Before you start poking around, and considering your symptoms, I'd honestly advise taking it to a workshop. Error codes and multiple system malfunctions suggest a more widespread electrical problem than just a loose wire. My repair cost was 95€, and that's cheaper than replacing the complete air conditioning.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I appreciate you confirming it could be more than just a loose wire. I'll book it in with a workshop to get it checked out properly. They confirmed a faulty sensor and a corroded connector, exactly as suspected. All sorted now!
