i20 preheating lamp and smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Hyundai i20 diesel owner experienced issues with the preheating lamp not switching off, the check engine light activating, and smoke during acceleration. These symptoms suggested potential problems with the glow plugs or the glow control unit. The owner suspected a defective cable or plug connection. After consulting a workshop, it was confirmed that a defective cable to the glow control unit was the cause, and the issue was resolved with a repair.

Thank you for your response. Cold starts are indeed more difficult. What should I check specifically on the glow plugs, or should I focus on the control unit wiring?

If cold starts are rough, it's very likely those glow plugs aren't getting the signal to heat up properly. Without proper tools, like a multimeter, testing each plug individually can be tricky. Given what you've described and your initial concern, it's worth having a workshop take a look. It could be the cable/plug connection as you guessed, to the glow control unit which is an easy fix.

I appreciate the advice. I took it to a workshop. It was a defective cable causing the issue with the glow control unit. The repair cost 95€. Thank you again!

Sounds like glow plug issues! Is it hard to start, especially when it's cold? The engine light plus the smoke definitely points to unburnt fuel. Check those glow plugs!
