i30 Diesel Cylinder Pressure

Alright, Hyundai i30 diesel (2021) owners, my steed, with 98k km, is throwing a fit. I'm getting cylinder pressure fluctuations – higher fuel consumption, sluggish power, and that check engine light. I've checked the air filter, MAF sensor – but nothing seems out of whack. Could this be a cascading failure?

Summary of the thread

A Hyundai i30 diesel owner experienced cylinder pressure fluctuations, leading to higher fuel consumption, sluggish power, and a check engine light. Initial checks of the air filter and MAF sensor showed no issues. Suggestions included inspecting the timing belt, fuel injectors, turbocharger, and camshaft. Ultimately, a faulty sensor affecting timing was identified as the cause, and it was resolved under warranty.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Fluctuating cylinder pressure on a 2021 i30 diesel... Hmm, that's not ideal. When was the timing belt last checked or replaced? How are the fuel injectors performing? Is there any unusual turbocharger noise or excessive smoke? It's a diesel, so those injectors need to be tip-top. And what about the camshaft?

Timing belt was supposedly inspected at the last service (10k km ago), but who knows if they really did it properly? Injectors could be the culprit, but wouldn't that usually throw a specific injector code? As for the turbo, I've not noticed any weird sounds. Camshaft... how would I even check that without tearing half the engine apart?

Yeah, injector codes should pop up, but sometimes they're sneaky! If the timing belt inspection was shoddy, that could definitely throw things off, messing with valve timing and compression. Checking the camshaft is a pain without proper tools. Honestly, with those symptoms and mileage, I'd swallow my pride and take it to a workshop with proper diagnostic gear. You don't want to risk doing more damage.

Right, I think you're spot on. I bit the bullet and took it to a shop. Turns out it was a timing issue, but caused by a faulty sensor. It was throwing off everything, including the cylinder pressure readings. They sorted the sensor, reset the timing, and zero cost under warranty. Thanks for the reality check!
