Thanks. The ignition key looks fine. How would the transponder cause these symptoms? I thought a faulty transponder would just prevent starting, not cause shutdowns or rough running.

You're right, a transponder issue usually prevents starting. But intermittent failures, especially with age or damage, can cause the signal to drop while driving, leading to shutdowns or rough running. It's possible, but a long shot. Best to have a workshop check the ignition switch and immobilizer system with diagnostic equipment. They can read error codes and pinpoint the cause. Could be a simple fuse, or something more.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop. It was a defective fuse related to the ignition system. Repair cost 52€. Your insights helped guide the diagnosis.

I had a similar issue with my i30, different year though. Those symptoms – engine not starting, unexpected shutdowns, and rough running – point towards the ignition switch. Have you checked the ignition key itself for damage or wear? The transponder inside communicates with the car's immobilizer. A problem there can prevent starting or cause shutdowns.
