i30 exhaust pressure sensor fault

Alright, gearheads, my 2018 Hyundai i30 petrol is throwing curveballs. Only 20k km on the clock! Getting a warning light on the dash, and she's puffing out smoke like a chimney when I put my foot down. Diagnostics point to the exhaust back pressure sensor. Anyone seen this gremlin before?

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Hyundai i30 with only 20,000 km was experiencing a warning light and excessive smoke, with diagnostics indicating an exhaust back pressure sensor fault. The issue was identified by the diagnostic trouble code P0471, pointing to a sensor range/performance problem. After verifying wiring and connections, it was suggested that the sensor might be defective. The problem was resolved by replacing the faulty sensor, restoring the vehicle's performance.

An exhaust back pressure sensor malfunction on a relatively new vehicle is unusual but not unheard of. Could you elaborate on the specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) retrieved? It would also be helpful to know if any recent modifications were performed to the exhaust or engine management system.

Sure thing. The code reader spat out P0471, which nails it to the exhaust pressure sensor range/performance. No mods whatsoever, everything's factory stock. I've checked the wiring and connections as best I can, but nothing obvious jumps out. What’s the next logical step?

Given the DTC and your verification of the wiring, the probability of a defective exhaust back pressure sensor is indeed high. Although further diagnostics could be performed, such as using a multimeter to test the sensor's output voltage under varying exhaust pressures, the cost of such testing may approach the cost of sensor replacement. I would suggest seeking professional assistance, as specialized tools may be required to properly diagnose the issue without simply throwing parts at the problem.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Bit the bullet and took it to a workshop. As you predicted, faulty exhaust pressure sensor. New sensor, labour and diagnostics set me back 245€. Runs like a dream now, no more smoke!
