i30 tailgate hall sensor fault

I've got a 2019 Hyundai i30 gasoline with about 116k km. The tailgate doesn't open completely, and the error memory shows a hall sensor fault. Could it be a faulty tailgate motor? Or is it more likely an electrical sensor issue? I've read that a defective cable or plug connection could cause this. Any thoughts?

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Hyundai i30 had a tailgate that wouldn't open completely, with an error memory indicating a hall sensor fault. The issue was suspected to be either a faulty tailgate motor or an electrical sensor problem, possibly due to a defective cable or plug connection. After consulting with others, it was suggested that the problem might be a faulty connection, likely due to wiring fatigue from constant use. The vehicle was taken to a workshop, where a defective cable/plug connection to the hall sensor was identified and replaced, resolving the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

The symptoms you describe strongly indicate a faulty connection. I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, though involving a different sensor. Did you check for any visible damage to the wiring or connectors near the tailgate hinge? Sometimes, the constant opening and closing can fatigue the wires.

Thanks for the input! When you say 'similar issue,' was it also an electrical sensor giving you grief? And was it difficult to trace the faulty connection? Did you fix it yourself?

Indeed, the problem was traced back to a corroded connector within the tailgate wiring harness. Given your report of a stored sensor fault, and the symptoms observed, it's highly plausible your Hyundai suffers the same affliction. While a competent individual might effect the repair themselves, given the intricacies of modern vehicle sensor systems I would propose you take it to a workshop

Thanks again for the advice. Took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. The cable/plug connection to the hall sensor was indeed defective. They replaced it, and the tailgate is working perfectly now. Total cost was 95€.
