i40 Automatic Transmission Shifting Problem
Summary of the thread
The 2016 Hyundai i40 is experiencing automatic transmission issues, including improper shifting and entering emergency mode, with the transmission indicator light occasionally illuminating. A potential cause identified is undervoltage in the car's electrical system, which can affect the transmission's performance. It is suggested to check the battery and alternator using a multimeter and OBD-II scanner to ensure proper voltage levels, as automatic transmissions are sensitive to voltage fluctuations. A workshop visit confirmed undervoltage as the issue, leading to a successful repair.

When you say 'undervoltage,' can you explain how they figured that out and what they did to fix it? I'd like to know the details.

They used a multimeter and an OBD-II scanner. A good car battery should be around 12.6 volts when the engine is off. When it's running, and the alternator is charging, it should be about 13.7 to 14.7 volts. If it's lower than that, it could be the cause. Automatic transmissions are sensitive to voltage, so I'd suggest a workshop visit since it sounds similar.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and undervoltage was causing the transmission issues. The diagnosis and repair cost 240€.

I had similar symptoms with my 2014 Opel Insignia. Undervoltage in the car’s electrical system was the problem. The automatic transmission is sensitive; any voltage issue can make it act erratically. Have you checked your car's battery and alternator?
