i40 fuel level sensor fault

Evening. My 2013 Hyundai i40, gasoline engine, is showing 195852 km. The check engine light keeps popping up, and occasionally the engine stalls when idling, especially when cold. I scanned it, and it's throwing a fuel level sensor fault code. I was wondering if anyone knows where the fuel level sensor fuse is located, if there even is one? I'm thinking a defective fuse might be the simplest explanation.

Summary of the thread

The main issue discussed is a fuel level sensor fault in a 2013 Hyundai i40, indicated by a check engine light and occasional engine stalling. The erratic behavior of the fuel gauge suggests a faulty sensor rather than a fuse issue. The recommended solution is to have the sensor inspected and potentially replaced by a qualified technician, which resolved the problem effectively.

Good evening. A fuel level sensor, as you likely know, measures the amount of fuel in the fuel tank and sends that information to the fuel gauge. Before delving deeper, could you please clarify if the fuel gauge reading is erratic or consistently inaccurate? Also, have you noticed any recent work done on the fuel system or any unusual smells, for instance, a strong gasoline smell, which could indicate a leak?

Thanks for the swift reply! The fuel gauge does jump around a bit, it's not steady. It will show half a tank, then suddenly drop to a quarter, then jump back up. As for recent work, nothing done recently at all. I also cannot smell any gasoline, so I don't think it's leaking.

Given the symptoms, and the fact that the fuel gauge reading is inconsistent, the fuel level sensor itself is the most probable cause of your issue. While checking fuses is a reasonable first step, the erratic gauge behavior points to a faulty sensor within the fuel tank. In such cases, it is advisable to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician. The error code and symptoms certainly suggest a sensor replacement may be required. Replacing the fuel level sensor typically costs around 52€.

Thanks so much for your help! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on. It was indeed the fuel level sensor, and the replacement cost was exactly what you predicted. Runs like a dream now!
