Impala Battery Draining

My 2001 Chevrolet Impala with a gasoline engine has a constantly draining battery, even with only 111888 km. I'm seeing speedometer error messages, weak, flickering lights, and a stored error. The engine start feels incredibly weak. Could a faulty battery sensor cause this?

Summary of the thread

A 2001 Chevrolet Impala is experiencing a constantly draining battery, with symptoms including speedometer error messages, weak and flickering lights, and a weak engine start. The issue may be caused by a faulty battery sensor, which can misreport the battery's charge, leading to improper charging and potential parasitic drain. It is advised to inspect the battery terminals for corrosion or looseness and to conduct a load test. Driving with these symptoms is not recommended due to the risk of getting stranded and potential damage to other parts. The problem was resolved by replacing the defective battery sensor.

Those symptoms suggest a battery or charging system issue. Check the battery terminals for corrosion or looseness. Has the battery been load tested? If the battery is healthy and the terminals are clean, a faulty battery sensor could be the problem. It might provide incorrect information, leading to over or undercharging.

Thanks! The terminals look clean and secure. I haven't done a load test yet. How does a defective battery sensor discharge the battery, and is it safe to drive the Impala like this?

A bad sensor might misreport the battery's charge, preventing the alternator from properly charging it, leading to discharge. Also, incorrect data could keep car systems active when the engine is off, causing parasitic drain. Driving with these symptoms isn't advisable. You risk getting stranded, and electrical issues could damage other parts. Get it inspected by a technician ASAP.

I took it to a mechanic, and you were right; the battery sensor was defective. Replacing it cost 315€, but the car runs perfectly now. Thanks for the help!
