Insight Brake Feedback

Hey, I've got a 2003 Honda Insight, hybrid engine, with about 125k km on it. Recently, the brakes have been acting weird. I'm getting some strange feedback from the pedal. Anyone else experienced this?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Honda Insight owner reported strange feedback from the brake pedal. A possible cause identified was the regenerative braking system being affected by low voltage from the 12V auxiliary battery. It was suggested to check the battery voltage and other electrical systems for anomalies. The issue was resolved by addressing the low voltage, confirming it was the cause of the brake feedback problem.

Greetings! I have a Honda Insight as well, and I recall experiencing a similar anomaly with the brake system. It appears as though the regenerative braking system in our vehicles can, on occasion, exhibit perplexing behaviour, which can manifest as unusual feedback through the brake pedal. Specifically, I would inquire as to whether you have assessed the state of charge of your 12V auxiliary battery? It's imperative to ensure that the voltage is within the operational parameters specified by Honda. A deficiency in voltage can precipitate a cascade of irregularities within the vehicle's electronic control units, thereby affecting the braking system's functionality. Have you observed any concurrent anomalies with other electrical systems within the vehicle?

Interesting. I haven't checked the battery voltage specifically, but the car starts fine. Could that really cause brake issues? What other electrical problems should I look for?

Affirmative, a seemingly innocuous undervoltage scenario can indeed propagate unforeseen ramifications within the intricate architecture of the hybrid system. In my experience, and predicated upon consultations with erudite colleagues, a diminished voltage supply can engender spurious signals, thereby corrupting the harmonious interplay between the hydraulic and regenerative braking mechanisms. Regarding concomitant electrical discrepancies, meticulously scrutinize the illumination intensity of the headlights, the responsiveness of the power windows, and any aberrant behaviour from the instrumentation cluster. In the event that these symptoms resonate with your present predicament, I would advocate seeking recourse at a reputable Honda service center or a specialized hybrid vehicle workshop, where a comprehensive diagnostic assessment can be executed.

Thanks for the detailed info! Turns out you were right. Low voltage was messing with the brakes. Cost me 240€ to get it sorted.
