Insight power steering malfunction
Summary of the thread
The conversation revolves around a power steering malfunction in a 2010 Honda Insight hybrid, characterized by a vibrating steering wheel, spongy handling, and increased steering effort. The suspected cause was a defective cable or plug. After inspecting the connections to the electric power steering (EPS) module, it was suggested to check for corrosion, damaged pins, and loose wiring, as these could disrupt communication with the vehicle's computer. Ultimately, a workshop visit revealed a defective plug connection, which was repaired, resolving the issue.

Thanks. I've visually inspected the connections to the EPS module and they appear correctly seated, but I haven’t tested connectivity or voltage. What should I look for regarding faulty connections, and can you elaborate on the communication links?

Focus on corrosion, damaged pins, and loose wiring. Even slight oxidation can disrupt the signal. The EPS module communicates with the vehicle's computer (ECU) via a CAN bus. A break in this communication can trigger the symptoms. Given you've inspected the connections and the problem persists, and considering there's an error code, I'd recommend a workshop visit. They can perform pinpoint tests with diagnostic equipment to isolate the precise cause. In my case, it turned out to be the EPS unit itself.

Thanks for the detailed explanation and advice. I visited a trusted workshop today. They located a defective plug connection of the steering system and repaired it for 95€. Thanks again for the help!

I've encountered something alike with my Insight. Was the error code specifically pointing to the steering system? My symptoms were much the same – vague steering, especially at lower speeds, and the steering wheel felt like it had a mind of its own sometimes. I investigated the electric steering unit, focusing on the connections. Did you specifically check the power and communication links to the electric power steering (EPS) module under the dash? These connections must be absolutely sound.
