Insignia Diesel Stalling After Filter Change

I'm having a nightmare with my 2008 Vauxhall Insignia diesel. The check engine light keeps popping on, and sometimes the engine just stalls when I'm idling – super annoying at traffic lights! It's also lost a noticeable amount of power. I've only done 32063 km. I recently changed the fuel filter, and I'm wondering if I messed something up. Could it be the fuel pressure regulator? I’m getting worried it’s a pressure sensor issue or a pressure drop somewhere in the fuel system, or maybe something got into the fuel rail. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

The 2008 Vauxhall Insignia diesel experienced stalling, power loss, and a check engine light after a fuel filter change. The issue was suspected to be related to the fuel pressure regulator, possibly due to a pressure sensor issue or a pressure drop in the fuel system. After diagnosis, it was confirmed that the fuel pressure regulator was faulty, likely triggered by the filter change, and replacing it resolved the problem.

That sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old Renault Megane, although it was a petrol engine. The check engine light, the stalling, and the power loss – all the same symptoms. After changing the fuel filter, did you perhaps get an error entry in the system? In my case, the pressure readings were all over the place due to a faulty fuel pressure regulator after I messed up the fuel filter replacement. It might be worth checking the error codes and looking at the live fuel pressure data.

Interesting! So, are you saying that even if the regulator itself wasn't faulty before, messing with the filter change could have somehow caused it to go bad or throw a false reading? How did you eventually figure out it was the regulator specifically, and what exactly was going on with the pressure readings?

Precisely! On my Megane, the act of changing the filter seemed to trigger something. The regulator, while perhaps nearing the end of its life anyway, got completely out of whack. The pressure readings were erratic, sometimes spiking high, sometimes dropping low, never stable. It threw a specific code pointing to the fuel pressure regulator. Given your symptoms and the timing with the filter change, I'd strongly suggest getting it properly diagnosed at a workshop. They'll be able to confirm if it's the regulator and what the error codes say.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on. It was indeed the fuel pressure regulator throwing error codes after the fuel filter change. Replaced it, cost me 45€, and the car is running perfectly again. Really appreciate you sharing your experience!
