Insignia inlet VANOS fault

I'm having a concerning issue with my 2022 Vauxhall Insignia diesel. It's got 194598 km on the clock. The check engine light keeps popping up, and I've noticed a significant increase in fuel consumption lately. After running diagnostics, it seems the inlet VANOS mechanics are faulty. The report indicates a possible defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves or a power supply issue. Any ideas before I take it in?

That sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my old Volvo C30 – though mine was petrol. The check engine light was on constantly, and the fuel consumption went through the roof! I remember reading something about how a faulty VANOS can mess with the inlet camshaft timing, leading to all sorts of problems. Is the engine misfiring at all?

Thanks for the quick reply! No engine misfire, but I read something about that too. I’m looking into any possible issues with the inlet camshaft but I have no idea where to begin looking. What was the problem for your Volvo? Did you happen to fix it?

Sadly, I wasn’t able to fix it myself. In my case, it definitely pointed to VANOS failure, and I ended up taking it to a workshop. They confirmed the solenoid valve was faulty and replaced it. That completely resolved the issue with the C30.

You were spot on! I took it to a mechanic, and they confirmed the inlet VANOS solenoid valve was indeed faulty. They replaced it, and the check engine light is gone, and the fuel consumption is back to normal! The repair cost me around 250€. Thanks for sharing your experience; it gave me a good starting point.
