Insignia Overheating and Radiator Fan Defect

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2016 Vauxhall Insignia diesel. The radiator fan seems defective. My Insignia is showing signs of overheating, and the check engine light is on. This occurs after driving for a sustained period, especially at higher speeds. The vehicle has 84956 km on it. I've visually inspected the fan blade, and it seems physically intact. I suspect it might be a faulty speed sensor causing the fan not to engage when the engine temperature rises. Has anyone encountered anything similar with their Insignias?

That sounds awfully familiar! I had a similar overheating problem with my 2012 Renault Megane a while back. The symptoms were practically identical: engine overheating and the check engine light. Like you, I initially suspected the fan itself, but it turned out to be something else entirely. Was the temperature gauge also going crazy? Did you notice any coolant leaks?

Indeed, the temperature gauge does fluctuate quite a bit, climbing higher than usual, and I did spot a small puddle of coolant under the car the other day. Could the coolant leak be related to the radiator fan issue, or are they potentially separate problems? Do you think that the coolant issue might point to a different root cause altogether?

Alright, the coolant leak definitely complicates things! When my Megane overheated, the fluctuating gauge was a key symptom. Given that you've also got a leak, it's plausible that the two are linked. While a faulty fan speed sensor is still a possibility, the leak might be causing low coolant levels, leading to the overheating. Honestly, I'd recommend getting it checked by a professional as soon as you can. It's hard to say without a proper diagnosis. Better safe than sorry when it comes to overheating, trust me!

Thank you for sharing your experience; it's reassuring to know I'm not alone in facing this sort of issue. Based on your advice, I took my Insignia to a trusted mechanic. It turned out that the speed sensor was indeed faulty and needed replacement. The repair cost came to around 250€. I appreciate your help!
