Interstar Diesel Jerking Accelerating

Need some help with my 2009 Nissan Interstar diesel. It's got 227687 km on the clock and lately it's been a nightmare. Getting jerking when accelerating, the check engine light is constantly on, and it feels like I'm driving with half the horses I used to have. Sometimes it even stalls when I'm idling, and the engine runs rough. There's this seriously strong exhaust smell too. Plugged it into a reader and got an error code. Anyone had similar issues? I'm thinking it might be the intake manifold, maybe a gasket leak or something, letting extra air into the engine and messing with the fuel mixture. Could even be scorching of the manifold itself. Any ideas before I start ripping things apart?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Nissan Interstar diesel was experiencing jerking during acceleration, a persistent check engine light, rough idling, stalling, and a strong exhaust smell. The suspected cause was a leak in the intake manifold, potentially due to a gasket issue or scorching. After consulting with others who had similar issues, it was confirmed that the intake manifold was indeed leaking. Replacing the manifold and gaskets resolved the problem, restoring the vehicle's performance.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds rough! I've got a Nissan Interstar as well, though mine's a bit newer. Had similar symptoms a while back – loss of power, rough running, and that check engine light staring me down. Turned out to be a leak in the intake somewhere. Basically, unmetered air was getting in after the airflow sensor. This will cause the engine to misfire as the air/fuel mixture will be wrong, which is why your engine is jerking and stalling.

Cheers for the reply! Where exactly was the leak on yours? Was it obvious once you had a look, or did you have to do some serious digging? And did you replace the whole intake manifold, or just a gasket? The symptoms are similar, so I want to start in the right place.

Honestly, I'm not mechanically minded enough to say exactly where the leak was. A vacuum leak can be tricky to find. I took it straight to the workshop and they sorted it. From what they said, the manifold itself was cracked, and the gaskets were shot. They replaced the whole thing. Best bet is to get it checked out professionally before you start throwing parts at it.

Appreciate the advice! Took it to a garage. Turns out you were spot on – intake manifold was leaking like a sieve due to scorching. New manifold and gaskets later, and she's running sweet as a nut again. Cost me 1180€ all in, but worth it to have her back on the road. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
