Ioniq5 Steering Angle Sensor Issue

Hi, I'm having an odd issue with my 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 (electric) with 66900 km on the clock. I've noticed increased effort required when steering, almost like the power steering is failing intermittently. Also, the steering wheel vibrates or shakes sometimes. I suspect the steering angle sensor might be the culprit, perhaps a coding issue? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 owner experienced increased steering effort and occasional steering wheel vibrations, suspecting a steering angle sensor issue. Despite no warning lights or recent alignment work, the problem was attributed to a potentially faulty sensor. It was suggested to have the sensor professionally diagnosed, leading to its replacement due to defective coding, resolving the steering issues.

The symptoms you describe do indeed point towards a potential malfunction with the steering angle sensor. Have you observed any warning lights illuminating on the instrument panel, specifically those related to traction control or electronic stability control? Furthermore, has the vehicle undergone any recent wheel alignment adjustments or suspension work that may have inadvertently affected the sensor's calibration?

Thanks for the quick reply. No warning lights are on, and I haven't had any alignment or suspension work done recently. Is it possible for the sensor to be faulty even without triggering a warning light? What are the chances that this is causing alignment problems?

Yes, it is entirely plausible for a steering angle sensor to exhibit faulty behavior without necessarily triggering a diagnostic trouble code or illuminating a warning light, particularly if the deviation falls within a certain threshold tolerated by the vehicle's control systems. Although a faulty steering angle sensor can contribute to perceived alignment issues due to its influence on systems such as electronic stability control and lane keeping assist, it is generally advisable to have the sensor diagnosed professionally. I recommend taking your Ioniq 5 to a qualified workshop for a comprehensive assessment and potential recalibration or replacement of the sensor.

Took the car to the workshop as suggested. Turns out the steering angle sensor was indeed defective, likely due to faulty coding as I suspected. They replaced it, and the total cost was 195€. Steering is back to normal now. Thanks for the advice!
