iQ DPF Exhaust Smell

I have a 2009 Toyota iQ diesel. A warning light is on, indicating a DPF problem. Engine power is reduced, there's smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, and a strong exhaust smell. I suspect a DPF regeneration problem. Has anyone had similar DPF issues with their Toyota iQ?

The symptoms you describe suggest a potential DPF issue. The warning light, reduced power, smoke, and strong smell are common indicators. The DPF traps soot and regenerates by burning it off. A failure or faulty sensor can cause these problems. Is the warning light constantly on, or intermittent? Have you noticed any changes in fuel consumption?

The warning light is constantly on, and I've seen a slight increase in fuel consumption. Does this solidify a DPF-related issue, or could there be other causes?

Given the constant warning light and increased fuel consumption, it's highly probable the issue is within the DPF system, specifically a defective exhaust back pressure sensor. These sensors monitor pressure and ensure proper regeneration. When they fail, they can provide incorrect readings, preventing regeneration. While a diagnostic scan is needed, the symptoms strongly point to this. Take your Toyota iQ to a qualified workshop for inspection. Driving with a faulty DPF system can cause further damage.

Based on your recommendation, the workshop confirmed the exhaust back pressure sensor was defective. The repair cost 245€, including the replacement and labor. The issue is resolved, and my Toyota iQ is performing optimally.
