Irregular fuel consumption and check engine light on 2013 Toyota Highlander
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Toyota Highlander is experiencing irregular fuel consumption and a check engine light, with a noticeable bad exhaust smell. The suspected cause is a faulty air valve. A similar issue in a 2016 Toyota RAV4 was resolved by replacing the cable/plug connection to the secondary air valve/secondary air pump, which restored normal fuel consumption and resolved the check engine light. The recommended solution is to visit a trusted garage for professional repair.

Hey, thanks for your answer! That does indeed sound like what's going on with me. Do you remember how much you paid to fix the problem? And have you had any other problems since the repair?

Hey, sure, no problem! So in my case it was 95€ to repair the cable/plug connection secondary air valve/secondary air pump. Since I went to the mechanic, the air valve fault has been repaired and there have been no further problems so far. Was a bit expensive but definitely worth the investment. So don't worry, if you get it fixed, your Toyota will run smoothly again.

Thanks, that reassures me a little! 95 for the repair isn't exactly what I wanted to hear, but if it helps to get the car running again, then it's worth it. I'll make an appointment with the garage tomorrow. Thanks again for the tips and advice!

Hey, I know what you mean. I went through similar things with my 2016 Toyota RAV4. Check Engine light came on, fuel guzzler came on too and confidence is starting to wane, right? Result of the workshop fault diagnosis: cable/plug connection secondary air valve/secondary air pump defective. The repair was no walk in the park. The cable and plug connection had to be completely replaced. The damage was serious, but not catastrophic. Once the parts were replaced, the car ran like a kitten again and the fuel consumption returned to normal. So, tip from me, go to a garage you trust and sort it out. It's not something you should fix yourself. All the best!
