Irregular shifting and warning light on Peugeot 307: Possible defect in transmission oil temperature sensor

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Hey guys, I'm a bit worried about my 2004 Peugeot 307 Diesel with a mileage of 10651 KM. The car has been showing some strange symptoms - the gearshift is slipping or erratic, there's a grinding noise when changing gear and even the warning light on the speedo has come on. My guess is that the gearbox oil temperature sensor may have gone. Has anyone had similar experiences with their car or can give me a tip on a fair mech? I wasn't exactly thrilled last time. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey buddy, I had the same problem with my 2007 Peugeot 407. My car showed similar symptoms and the mechanic said at the time that it was a faulty transmission control unit. The gearshifting was choppy and there was also a grinding noise when changing gear, just like yours. That was a pretty serious matter, not a trifle! After all, the control unit controls the entire gearshift. Unfortunately, it had to be done properly, but then it ran like clockwork again. However, it's not something you can easily fix yourself, so I would definitely recommend taking it to a professional mechanic. By the way, my mech told me that in some cases the error occurs even earlier, so it's common and nothing rare. So don't worry too much just because you have the same symptoms. Hope I was able to help!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply, really great! It does seem to be the same problem. I remember that such repairs always knock my socks off in terms of cost. What amount are we talking about here, if you can still remember? I mean, of course the price still makes a difference... and has anything changed since your repair or is your Peugeot really running like clockwork now? Thanks again for your help!

Hey buddy, no problem, that's what a forum is for. Well, the whole thing cost me around €1000. It was quite a chunk, but it's been quiet ever since. Your suspicion about the gearbox oil temperature sensor was right, by the way, the mechanic had also had a hand in that. Since then, my Peugeot has been running like clockwork again, and I haven't had any more problems. So don't worry, after that your jet fighter will certainly be fit again.

Wow, 1000€ is quite a lot, but what don't you do for your car, right? Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience, it really made things easier for me. I think I'll follow your advice and take my Peugeot to the mechanic as soon as possible. Hopefully it will be in as good a shape as yours after the repair. Wish me luck guys! Thanks again for the tips!

It sounds like your transmission may not be engaging properly. This could be due to a variety of issues, such as a low transmission fluid level, a faulty shift solenoid, or even a mechanical issue within the transmission itself. I would recommend starting by checking your transmission fluid level and condition. If the fluid is low or appears burnt or dirty, it may need to be changed. If the fluid level and condition are fine, then it would be best to have a professional mechanic diagnose the issue, as further troubleshooting could require specialized tools and knowledge.
