ix35 EGR Valve Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Hyundai ix35 diesel with 174,544 km is experiencing issues such as reduced engine power, black smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing sound. These symptoms suggest a defective EGR valve, which can cause a vacuum leak, affecting the fuel/air ratio and potentially leading to emissions test failure. The recommended solution is to have the EGR valve inspected and replaced by a professional, which resolved the issues in this case.

The smoke is black, yes. What do you mean by vacuum leak? And how did you fix it? Is it something that would cause a problem in the emissions test?

A vacuum leak means that unmetered air is getting into the engine, messing with the fuel/air ratio. If the EGR valve is jammed open or not closing properly due to a leak, it will cause running issues and likely fail the emissions test. Honestly, it's a pain to diagnose without proper tools. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a local garage, and you were spot on - it was a defective EGR valve. The replacement cost me 355€ including labour. Now it runs like new.

I had similar problems with my ix35. What color is the smoke? If it's black and you hear a hissing, it could be a vacuum leak related to the EGR. Have you noticed any difference after the engine is warmed up?
