ix35 NOx Sensor Exhaust Smell
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Hyundai ix35 owner reported a check engine light and an error related to the NOx sensor, accompanied by an unusual exhaust smell. The issue might stem from a defective cable or plug connection, or possibly a leak in the exhaust system. Another owner with a similar problem suggested that the exhaust smell could indicate a sensor failure and recommended professional inspection, which led to the replacement of a broken sensor. The original poster decided to seek professional help to avoid further complications.

I did have a quick look at the connections, but couldn't see anything obviously wrong. I'm not sure how thoroughly I should investigate further, as I don't want to damage anything. Did your symptoms also include the exhaust leak smell, and what was the final fix?

Yes, the exhaust smell was definitely there. The lambda probe reports data based on nitrogen oxide concentration in exhaust gases. In my case, I suspected faulty wiring too but ended up just taking it to a workshop. They confirmed a broken sensor and replaced it. Saved myself the headache.

OK, I think I'll do the same and take it to a professional. I was hoping it was just a loose connection, but I don't want to mess around with the exhaust system too much. I will post the resolution once it's fixed. The repair ended up costing 95€. Thanks again!

I had the same problem with my ix35! The check engine light and the error code pointing to the NOx sensor. Exhaust smell could indicate a leak somewhere in the exhaust system, possibly related to the sensor failure. Did you check the sensor's connections yourself?
