Jaguar F Pace Transmission Failure: Symptoms & Solutions

Having troubles with my 2016 Jaguar F Pace diesel. The automatic transmission started acting up with rough gear changes and grinding sounds. Both check engine and transmission warning lights are on. The gearbox slips occasionally and diagnostic shows error codes. Based on these symptoms, I suspect the torque converter lock-up clutch might be failing. Has anyone dealt with similar automatic transmission problems on their F Pace? Looking for insights on repair experiences and workshop solutions. Particularly interested in how the transmission repair was handled and what the actual issue turned out to be. Any input on repair costs would also be helpful.

Having decent experience with automatic transmission issues, I went through something very similar with my 2014 Jaguar XF diesel last year. The symptoms were nearly identical, rough shifting, transmission warning lights, and that distinctive grinding noise during gear changes. The lock-up clutch in the torque converter was indeed failing, causing converter failure and engine surge issues. After the initial diagnosis, the transmission repair revealed worn clutch plates inside the converter, which explained the erratic behavior. The workshop completely rebuilt the automatic transmission, replacing the torque converter and several other worn components. Total repair cost came to 2120€, including parts and labor. The repair took about 4 days, but the transmission has worked flawlessly since. Could you share some additional details about your F Pace: Current mileage, Are the issues more noticeable when the transmission is cold or warm, Does the problem get worse during highway driving, What transmission fluid service history does the vehicle have This information would help determine if your situation matches what I experienced and could guide you toward the right repair solution. The symptoms you describe strongly suggest transmission component wear, but knowing these details would help confirm if its indeed a converter failure rather than a control module issue.

Thanks for the detailed response regarding the transmission issues. My F Pace has 141335 KM on the clock, and the issues are definitely worse when cold. The transmission fluid was last changed during regular service about 15000 KM ago. The grinding noise becomes more noticeable during highway cruising, especially when the torque converter tries to lock up at steady speeds. The converter fault seems to trigger most often during this condition. After getting the error codes checked, the diagnostic report also points toward transmission wear rather than just a control module problem. Will likely proceed with the repair given the similar symptoms you described with your XF. The repair cost estimate seems in line with what my local workshop quoted.

Thanks for those additional details, it definitely sounds like the exact same automatic transmission issue I faced. The cold-start symptoms and highway grinding noise match perfectly with what my XF experienced before the torque converter repair. The automatic gearbox problems occurring mainly during highway cruising, especially during lock-up clutch engagement, is a classic sign of converter failure. With your mileage being similar to when my transmission started acting up, worn clutch plates inside the torque converter are the likely culprit. While the recent transmission fluid change is good, once the lock-up clutch starts deteriorating, fresh fluid alone wont resolve the underlying mechanical wear. My repair involved a complete converter rebuild with new clutch plates and other worn components replaced. Based on your description and my experience, I would proceed with the transmission repair soon. Delaying it could lead to more extensive automatic transmission damage if metal particles from the failing converter contaminate other components. The 15000 KM since your last fluid service is actually helpful timing, the workshop can properly evaluate any debris in the current fluid as part of diagnosing the full extent of converter wear.

Thanks for all this helpful information about the transmission repair. After comparing my F Pace symptoms with your XF experience, I feel more confident about moving forward with the repair work. The matching issues during cold starts and highway driving, plus the torque converter lock-up problems, really confirm what I suspected. The automatic transmission repairs and labor costs you mentioned match closely with my workshop quote. Given that my mileage and symptoms align with your case, and considering the risk of additional damage from a failing converter clutch, I will schedule the repair next week. The tip about checking the transmission fluid for debris during diagnosis is particularly useful, I will make sure to ask the workshop about this when they evaluate the full extent of the converter fault. Really appreciate you sharing your repair experience in such detail. It helps validate my concerns about the automatic gearbox problems and gives me a clear picture of what to expect during the repair process. Will update once the work is completed to share how it turned out.
