Jaguar XE Sunroof Stuck, Initialization Error Fix Needed

Having issues with my 2018 Jaguar XE (gas, 88907km). The car sunroof system is acting up, both the sunblind and convertible top are completely stuck and wont move at all. Getting a sunroof not initialized error on the display. Has anyone experienced similar problems with their sunroof control system? Would be great to hear about repair costs and trusted mechanic experiences, as my last service visit wasnt great. Looking for advice before taking it in again.

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Jaguar XE owner experienced a sunroof system malfunction, with both the sunblind and convertible top stuck and an initialization error displayed. A similar issue was resolved by another Jaguar owner through a sunroof system recoding and calibration, rather than extensive repairs. The problem was attributed to debris in the tracks causing the error, which was fixed by cleaning and resetting the system. The solution emphasized the importance of proper diagnostics and finding a knowledgeable technician to avoid unnecessary and costly repairs.

I had the same sunroof operation issue on my 2015 Jaguar XF 2.0L. The sunroof mechanism completely stopped responding, showing the same initialization error. The root cause turned out to be a failed control module and damaged wiring harness in the sunroof system. The vehicle sunroof repair required: Full diagnostic scan, Replacing the sunroof control module, Rewiring the damaged harness, Performing a sunroof reset procedure, Complete system recoding This was a serious repair that took two full days at the workshop. The sunroof mechanism needed specialized tools and dealer-level diagnostic equipment to properly reset and code the new module. Parts availability was also a challenge. After the repair, its critical to perform regular maintenance of the sunroof tracks and keep the drainage channels clear to prevent similar issues. The control module is sensitive to water damage, which can cause these initialization failures. Based on your description, youre likely facing the same control module issue. Best to have it checked at a certified shop with proper diagnostic capabilities, as generic scanners often cant properly communicate with the sunroof system.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the sunroof system repair. This sounds quite similar to my situation. How much did you end up paying for the full repair? Its helpful to know what to expect cost-wise since my local shop quoted a pretty high price. Also wondering if your car sunroof has worked perfectly since the fix or if youve had any recurring problems with the sunroof control? My XE already had some minor issues before this complete failure, so Im a bit concerned about long-term reliability after repair.

Thanks for asking about the costs. After taking it to the certified shop last week, I can confirm my sunroof troubleshooting ended up being much simpler than initially expected. Unlike my first post where I mentioned major repairs, the issue was resolved through recoding of the sunroof system. The technician performed a sunroof calibration and fixed the initialization error for just 75€. The vehicle sunroof has been working flawlessly since the repair, no sticking, no error messages, and smooth operation of both the sunblind and panel. The sunroof control responds perfectly now. This was actually a much better outcome than my earlier experience where I thought I needed extensive repairs. Looking back, I would recommend getting a proper diagnostic first rather than assuming the worst. While my 2015 XF initially showed symptoms suggesting major repairs, a competent technician might find a simpler solution for your XE as well. The key is finding a shop with the right diagnostic equipment for proper sunroof troubleshooting.

Following up on this whole sunroof control situation, wanted to share how things turned out. Took the XE to a certified Jaguar specialist yesterday after reading the responses here. Really glad I did because it saved me a lot of money compared to what my local shop quoted. Turns out the automobile sunroof just needed a proper reset and recalibration, similar to what others mentioned. The tech found some debris in the tracks that was causing the initialization error. After a thorough cleaning and reset of the sunroof system, everything works perfectly now. Total cost came to 120€ for the diagnostic and repair work. Way better than the 800€ quote I got from my previous shop who insisted on replacing the entire sunroof control module. The car sunroof opens and closes smoothly now, and the error message is completely gone. Just shows how important it is to find a knowledgeable tech who actually diagnoses the problem properly instead of jumping straight to expensive parts replacement. Thanks for all the helpful advice that pointed me in the right direction.
