Jaguar XF Diesel Injection Troubles Sap Performance

Looking for advice on my 2020 Jaguar XF Diesel that seems to have injection problems. Engine power is down significantly, and fuel consumption has gone way up. Also getting black smoke under acceleration and having trouble keeping it running at idle. Currently at 133589 km. Had a poor experience with my last mechanic, so would appreciate hearing about similar experiences and recommendations on fixing these performance issues. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their Jag?

Had similar symptoms on a 2017 Jaguar XE 2.0d. The power loss and black smoke pointed to a faulty fuel injection system. Diagnostic tests revealed two issues: contaminated fuel injectors and a failing fuel pressure sensor. The system required a complete fuel injector cleaning service plus replacement of one defective injector. The fuel pressure sensor was also replaced as it was sending incorrect signals to the engine control unit, causing the erratic idle and poor fuel economy. This turned out to be a serious repair requiring specialized equipment. The black smoke typically indicates incomplete fuel combustion, often due to incorrect fuel pressure or damaged injectors. These symptoms match yours, especially the power loss and increased fuel consumption. The repair involved: Full system diagnostic, Fuel injector removal and ultrasonic cleaning, Replacement of one faulty injector, New fuel pressure sensor, ECU recalibration, Full system pressure test After the repair, fuel economy returned to normal and the power was fully restored. The black smoke issue completely resolved. For these specific symptoms on Jaguar diesels, it is critical to use a workshop with proper diagnostic equipment and Jaguar-specific experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the injection system repair. The symptoms you described match mine exactly, especially the black smoke and poor fuel economy. Getting this fixed at a specialist shop seems like the right approach. Just wondering, do you remember the total cost for all that work? Also, has everything stayed running smoothly since the repair or have you noticed any other maintenance issues pop up?

Great news, my injection system repair ended up being much simpler than initially expected. The mechanic found a loose cable connection to the fuel pressure sensor that was causing all those symptoms. Total cost was just 95€ to fix the faulty connection, which is far better than needing a complete system overhaul. Since the repair 6 months ago, the diesel engine has been running perfectly. Power is back to normal, no more black smoke, and fuel consumption returned to standard levels. The air and fuel systems are working together properly now. This really shows why proper diagnostics are crucial, what seemed like a major injection system fault turned out to be a straightforward electrical connection issue. Definitely worth finding a mechanic who thoroughly checks the simpler fixes before jumping to expensive repairs. Been doing regular maintenance since then with no other issues appearing. The petrol stations near me have good quality fuel which probably helps keep the system clean too.

After getting your reply about the simple fix, I decided to take my Jaguar to a specialist diesel mechanic across town. Turned out my issues were a bit more complex than just a loose connection, but still not as bad as I feared. The diagnostic showed two partially clogged injectors and a failing fuel pressure regulator. Total repair came to 780€ including parts and labor. Steep, but worth every cent, the performance difference is incredible. The black smoke is completely gone, fuel consumption is back to normal, and the engine runs smoothly at idle. Really glad I got a proper diagnosis instead of jumping to conclusions about needing a full system replacement. The maintenance schedule is now back on track and the mechanic gave me some tips about using better quality diesel to prevent future injection issues. Best part is I found a reliable specialist who took the time to explain everything.
