Jaguar XK Passenger Seat Motor Failure Fix & Costs
Summary of the thread
The 2006 Jaguar XK experienced passenger seat motor failure due to worn wiring, causing error codes and non-responsive power seats. The issue was identified as a common problem with the seat harness wiring, which can fail from repeated movement and wire fatigue. The solution involved replacing the seat wiring harness, a repair requiring several hours of labor. After the repair, the seat motor functioned smoothly, and no further electrical issues were reported, highlighting the importance of addressing wiring problems promptly to prevent additional electrical system complications.

Thanks for that detailed reply about the seat harness issue. My problem was indeed identical, with the power seats failing and the wiring being completely worn through. I went ahead with the repair after getting a few quotes. Quick follow up, what was your final repair cost? Did you experience any other electrical gremlins in the seat adjustment system afterwards? My XK has been running fine since the fix but I keep a close eye on the seat motor function just in case.

Had the XF in the shop last month for the seat harness issue, all sorted now without any lingering electrical issues. The seat adjustment system works perfectly again. They found the battery was heavily discharged which apparently contributed to the electric seat malfunction. The total repair came to 290€ for the battery replacement and associated electrical work. This resolved both the seat wiring problem and the overall electrical system stability. The seat switch and motor now respond immediately when pressed. Since fixing the battery, all the power seat functions have stayed reliable. The technician mentioned its worth checking the battery health regularly, as low voltage can affect the seat adjustment mechanisms and other electrical components. Been using the seat controls daily for a month now without any issues. Keeping an eye on things is smart, but you probably wont see the problem return if they did a proper harness repair. These electrical seat systems are quite robust once properly fixed.

Thanks for the advice. Finally got my XK back from the repair shop yesterday. The seat wiring was completely shot, with exposed wires causing the seat motor issues. Ended up paying 380€ for the complete fix, including a new seat harness and labor. More than expected but less than I feared. The mechanic showed me the old wiring, it was badly frayed where it flexes under the seat adjustment mechanism. The seat operation is now smooth and responsive. All electrical functions are working perfectly, including the seat position memory. Mechanic mentioned they also cleaned all the seat track connections while they had it apart. Pleased to report no other electrical gremlins have appeared since the repair. The seat motor responds instantly and the adjustment is actually quieter than before. Definitely worth getting it properly fixed rather than living with intermittent failures.

The electric seat issues you describe match what I encountered with my 2009 Jaguar XF. The seat harness wiring commonly fails on these models due to repeated movement and wire fatigue. In my case, the automotive seat system showed similar symptoms, no response from the seat motor and error codes. The problem turned out to be a broken wire bundle in the seat harness where it flexes under the seat. The wire insulation had worn through, causing intermittent shorts. This is a known issue requiring complete replacement of the seat wiring harness. The repair involves removing the seat cover and padding to access the damaged wiring. While this is a serious repair that takes several hours of labor, its not a safety critical issue. The seat switch itself rarely fails on these models. Before replacing parts, have a technician test the continuity of the seat wiring harness. If you hear clicking but no movement, its likely the wiring rather than the motor or switch. Worth noting that continuing to use the electric seat with damaged wiring can cause additional electrical system problems, so best to address it promptly. The repair requires specific knowledge of Jaguar electrical systems.
