Journey's Bad Fuel Pump Causing Multiple Engine Problems

Has anyone dealt with fuel pump issues on a 2022 Journey? My engine wont start properly, stalls at idle, and runs really rough when it does work. The check engine light is on and fuel consumption has gone way up. Already pulled the codes but want to confirm if these symptoms match fuel pump failure before heading to a car mechanic. Particularly interested in repair experiences and costs, was the fuel pump replacement straightforward or did you run into other fuel system problems? Looking for real-world feedback on resolving similar car performance issues.

Having faced similar fuel system issues with my 2020 Hornet, I can relate to these symptoms. With some experience working on cars, I learned these signs often point to fuel delivery problems. In my case, the engine would also stall at idle and run poorly, matching your symptoms exactly. After getting it checked, the issue turned out to be much simpler than a complete fuel pump failure. The car mechanics found a faulty cable connection to the fuel pump, which was causing irregular gasoline delivery. The repair was relatively straightforward, costing 95€ to fix the connection. This solved all issues, no more stalling, normal fuel consumption returned, and engine performance went back to normal. Before jumping to conclusions about needing a full fuel pump replacement, could you share: What error codes are you getting? Does the problem occur more when the tank is below half full? Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to ON position? This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or if it might be something different in the fuel system.

Latest service was just 2 weeks ago at 59618 KM. You make a good point about checking the wiring first. After reading the replies, I pulled code P0087 which indicates low fuel rail pressure. When turning the key, the pump sound is much quieter than normal. The problem does seem worse with low fuel levels. The auto repair shop quoted 850€ for a complete fuel pump assembly replacement. Given the symptoms and diagnostic results, it seems the pump itself is failing rather than just a connection issue. The car performance has gotten significantly worse over the past week. Would appreciate any feedback on whether this price seems reasonable for the fuel system repair needed.

Thanks for those additional details. The P0087 code combined with the weak pump sound definitely points to a failing fuel pump in your case, unlike my simpler wiring fix. The 850€ quote for a complete fuel pump assembly is actually in line with what you should expect. The part itself usually runs 500-600€ for our model, plus labor for fuel system work which is more complex than my cable repair was. Looking back at how my car performance improved after fixing just the wiring, I can now tell the symptoms were different. My fuel injector system still had good pressure, while your diagnostic shows the actual pump is struggling to maintain proper gasoline delivery. A few things to consider: Make sure they use OEM parts for the fuel pump replacement, Have them inspect the fuel filter while theyre in there, Request checking all fuel system connections during the repair Given how quickly your symptoms are progressing, I would not delay the repair. A complete pump failure could leave you stranded, which is what I was trying to avoid with my early diagnosis.

Based on that insight and quote feedback, Ill schedule the fuel pump replacement this week. The symptoms match what others experienced with pump failure, and waiting could lead to bigger problems. The 850€ price seems fair considering the parts and labor involved. Will make sure to request OEM parts and have them check the complete fuel system while doing the work. Better to address it now before I end up stranded somewhere with a completely failed pump. The declining car performance and that weak pump sound when turning the key really confirm this is the right call. Thanks everyone for helping diagnose the issue. This has been much more helpful than just relying on the error code alone. Will update once the repair is done to confirm if replacing the fuel pump resolved all the engine stalling and rough running problems.
