Jumpy Automatic Transmission Implausible Shifting

Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my 2004 Citroen Jumpy, gasoline engine, with 131237 km on the clock. Basically, the automatic transmission is acting possessed! I'm getting implausible shifting behavior, the transmission indicator light keeps popping on, and sometimes it just refuses to shift properly, throwing the whole thing into emergency mode. I've been reading online, and some people are saying it might be undervoltage causing the issue? Anyone experienced anything similar? It feels like the car is trying to drive underwater, super sluggish and unpredictable.

Summary of the thread

The 2004 Citroen Jumpy was experiencing erratic automatic transmission behavior, including implausible shifting and emergency mode activation. The issue was suspected to be caused by undervoltage, but further investigation revealed that the transmission oil was worn out and needed replacement. After flushing and replacing the oil, the transmission functioned properly again, resolving the problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Wow, that sounds frustrating! I had a similar nightmare with my old 2012 Opel Astra. Same deal – automatic transmission freaking out, going into limp mode at the worst possible times. In my case, it turned out the transmission oil was seriously worn out. Think of it like trying to run a marathon with shoes full of glue. Is it possible that could be the issue? Have you checked the condition of your transmission oil?

Thanks for the reply! That's interesting. I haven't specifically checked the transmission oil condition, just the level. I assumed if the level was okay, then the oil was doing its job. How did you diagnose the oil as the culprit? Was it visibly dirty or something?

Yeah, the level might be fine, but old oil loses its viscosity and lubricating properties. On my Astra, the mechanic showed me the drained oil – it was almost black and sludgy, not the nice red color it should be. Think of it like comparing fresh honey to old, crystallised honey – both are honey, but one flows much better! Given your symptoms, and the mileage on your Jumpy, I'd seriously consider getting the transmission oil checked and potentially replaced. It's probably best to take it to a workshop. Could save you a lot of headache in the long run.

Okay, I really appreciate the advice! It makes a lot of sense. I took it to my local shop, and you were spot on – the transmission oil was shot. They flushed it and replaced it, and it cost me about 240€, but the Jumpy is shifting like a dream again. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Seriously, you saved me from potentially much bigger problems!
