Ka steering angle sensor issue

I'm experiencing issues with my 2005 Ford Ka, gasoline engine, with 45911 km. Steering requires increased effort, as if the power steering is failing. The steering wheel vibrates and shakes at times. I suspect it may be related to the steering angle sensor, and the coding may be faulty. Has anyone else encountered similar alignment problems?

I had an identical problem with my 2012 Opel Astra. The symptoms you describe are spot on. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty steering angle sensor affecting the electronic stability program. Before sensor replacement, I'd suggest checking the wheel alignment as that can sometimes cause similar issues. Do you have any error codes?

Thanks for the quick reply! I don't have a code reader myself, so I'm not sure about any error codes. But, if the coding of the steering angle sensor is faulty, can that be fixed, or does the entire sensor need replacing?

With my Astra, the garage confirmed that the sensor itself was defective, triggering the electronic stability control errors. Recoding wasn't an option in my specific case; replacement was required. Considering your symptoms and the potential link to a faulty sensor, I would recommend taking your Ka to a workshop to get a proper diagnosis. They can perform a thorough inspection and pinpoint the exact cause of the problem. The cost for the diagnosis is also a lot less than just replacing parts. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks! I appreciate the advice. I took the Ka to a local mechanic, and you were right – the steering angle sensor was indeed the culprit. It needed replacing; the coding was off. The total repair cost including sensor replacement and alignment came to about 195€. Steering is now back to normal!
