I don't smell diesel or see excessive smoke. I haven't used fuel additives. What type do you recommend and why would it help?

No smell or smoke is good, could have been a leak. There are tons of diesel injector cleaners. Just read reviews and pick one that dissolves deposits and cleans nozzles. But with all those symptoms, I'd worry about more than dirty injectors. It might be more than a simple blockage. I'd take it to a workshop.

The workshop confirmed a defective injection nozzle. Replacement and recalibration cost 515€. The car now runs as expected. Thanks for the help.

That sounds bad! I've heard of similar diesel issues with that mileage. Poor starting, stalling, and higher fuel consumption really points to fuel delivery. Do you smell unburnt diesel or see excessive exhaust smoke? Have you tried fuel additives to clean the injectors? Might be worth a shot before anything drastic.
