It started gradually about a week ago. What exactly does the EGR valve do, and how sure are you that's the cause, also what would be considered a long time that it has been doing this?

The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) redirects some exhaust gases back into the engine's intake. This lowers combustion temperatures, reducing vehicle emissions. If the EGR valve is stuck open or closed, it can cause all sorts of problems. Given all those symptoms, and especially the hissing noise, it's hard to say from here. You need proper diagnostics. I would strongly recommend you visit a workshop.

I took it to a local workshop, and they confirmed it was indeed the EGR valve. The repair cost 355€. Everything is working as expected now.

Sounds like it could be the EGR valve. Reduced power, smoke, rough running, and the check engine light are common symptoms. The hissing might be a vacuum leak related to the EGR system, or perhaps somewhere else like a cracked hose affecting the catalytic converter. Has it been doing this for long?
