Kangoo Gear Shift Indicator Issue

I'm having a strange issue with my 2008 Renault Kangoo diesel. It's got 224461 km on the clock. The gear shift indicator in the instrument panel is completely dead. This is causing some serious drivability problems. I can't engage the gears properly, the automatic transmission shifts erratically and slips sometimes, and I'm even getting grinding noises when it tries to shift. The error memory has a fault stored related to this issue, and the gear selection display in the speedometer is also non-functional. It's almost like the car doesn't know what gear it's in. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2008 Renault Kangoo diesel is experiencing a dead gear shift indicator, leading to drivability issues such as erratic shifting, slipping, and grinding noises. The problem is likely linked to a fault in the transmission control system, possibly due to a defective control unit. A thorough inspection of the wiring harness and connectors is suggested, but professional diagnostic tools are recommended for accurate identification and repair. Taking the vehicle to a qualified workshop for a detailed diagnosis and potential control unit replacement is advised.

The symptoms you describe do indeed point to a problem within the transmission control system. Given the combination of indicator malfunction, shifting anomalies, and stored error codes, it's highly probable the control unit itself is at fault. Have you by any chance examined the wiring harness and connectors leading to the transmission control module for any signs of damage or corrosion?

Thanks for the reply! I did a quick visual inspection of the wiring harness near the shift knob and around the car dashboard area, but didn't see anything obvious. Do you know if there's a specific connector or area in the automotive electronics I should be focusing on?

While a visual check is a good starting point, without diagnostic tools, further investigation is difficult. The control unit's location varies, but a workshop will pinpoint it using a diagnostic scan. Considering all the symptoms, a defective control unit is the most likely culprit, and the replacement and reprogramming could set you back around 1000€. I'd strongly recommend taking it to a qualified workshop equipped to diagnose and repair such systems.

Okay, that confirms my suspicions. Thanks so much for the expert advice. I'll book it in with a workshop to get the control unit checked out. Hopefully, they can get it sorted without too much trouble!
