Kangoo VANOS Solenoid Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Renault Kangoo diesel was experiencing issues with the check engine light and increased fuel consumption, suspected to be caused by a malfunctioning inlet VANOS. The VANOS system, responsible for variable valve timing, can affect engine efficiency if not functioning properly. The problem was identified as a faulty VANOS solenoid, which was confirmed and resolved by a garage, restoring normal engine performance.

Solenoid valves, eh? Where exactly would I find those, and is there any way to test them myself before I start tearing things apart?

The VANOS solenoids are usually located near the camshaft. As for testing, you could check their resistance with a multimeter, or even try swapping them if there are two identical ones. But honestly, given the symptoms, and the fact it's a diesel, you might be better off getting it checked by a workshop. Could save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

I took it to a local garage. Turns out you were spot on about the VANOS solenoid. They replaced it, and the light's gone, and fuel consumption is back to normal. Cost me about 250€, but worth it for the peace of mind!

VANOS problems can definitely cause those symptoms. VANOS is a variable valve timing system, and if the inlet side isn't working right, it messes with your engine's efficiency. Have you checked the VANOS solenoid valves? A faulty solenoid or a bad power supply to it is a common culprit.
