Kia Rio Diesel 2006: Check Engine Light On, Loss in Power, and Possible DPF Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2006 Diesel Kia Rio is experiencing black smoke, a bad exhaust smell, a check engine light, and power loss, likely due to a clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF). The DPF is not regenerating properly, which may be causing these issues. A similar case with a 2009 Diesel Kia Sorento involved a defective DPF that required removal, cleaning, and reinstallation. The suggested solution is to have the DPF professionally diagnosed and serviced to resolve the problem and prevent further engine or exhaust issues.

Hey there sounds like a mirror image of what I'm dealing with, right down to the dodgy DPF! Definitely an unpleasant surprise! Could you recall the dent this issue put in your wallet? I'm all for fixing it but I dread the idea of breaking the bank. Also, fingers crossed, has there been any other engine or exhaust related issues popping up after you got the DPF issue sorted? Appreciate your response, cheers!

Hey, the DPF issue was definitely a bit of a pocket pinch, can't deny that! To be upfront with you, it set me back €1550, obviously a chunk of change but necessary to get my Kia Sorento breathing normally again. That covered the internal fix of the defective DPF. It's an investment really, considering the importance of the component we're talking about. And to answer your second question, so far so good! Ever since the DPF got sorted, I've not noticed any other engine or exhaust related issues cropping up. Seems to me the heavy load on the diesel particulate filter was the major culprit behind my previous worries, and visiting the mechanic was worth every penny. So don't hold back do what's necessary for your Kia Rio. And remember, don't let the fear of hefty bills deter you from maintenance and essential repairs. Fingers crossed for you!

Hey! Appreciate your straightforwardness about the cost. Although €1550 is steep, knowing that it eliminated the root cause of other potential issues offers some peace of mind. Your experience reassured me to take action and not sideline the issue - cause let's face it, a car that suffocates on its own exhaust is not much of a companion, right? I've made a booking with my local mechanic, hoping for the best possible outcome. Thanks for the encouragement. Will keep you guys posted after sorting out my Diesel Kia Rio's DPF issue. That's a wrap then, cheers for the support!

Hey, sounds like you're having a similar issue I did with my 2009 Diesel Kia Sorento not too long ago. Same symptoms - black smoke, nasty smell, check engine light on, drop in power, and a dodgy DPF. Turned out that my DPF was internally defective. It wasn't something I'd picked up right away. The issue was serious and it seemed like my car breathing was compromised. Like yours, my filter was not regenerating properly which was contributing to the problem. The local garage did an intensive diagnosis. They had to remove the DPF, clean it out and install it back. Remember, the care that your DPF needs is not to be overlooked, often people take it lightly. I can tell you it's a relief when you finally sort it out. Hope you manage to fix yours without too much of a headache! Good luck.
