Kicks immobilizer issue

My 2018 Nissan Kicks with a gasoline engine is bricked. It cranks but won't fully start, or sometimes starts for a second then dies. The error code says something about the immobilizer. Could it be a key signal issue?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my old Opel Astra. The immobilizer is basically an anti-theft system that uses a chip in your key to verify that it is the right key for your car. If the car can't recognize the key, it won't start the engine. Usually, this is because of a key programming problem. Have you tried your spare key?

Yeah, I tried the spare. Same thing. So, what does 'key programming problem' actually mean? Like, is the key itself broken, or is it something with the car's computer?

It's usually not the key physically breaking, but the data stored on the chip inside the key getting corrupted or lost. The car’s computer (the ECU) needs to recognize the key's unique code. If the ECU and the key’s code don’t match, the immobilizer kicks in. Sadly, this usually means a trip to the workshop so they can recode the key to match the car’s computer.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for explaining it, though. I went to a shop; they said the key programming was incorrect. Cost me 45€ to get it sorted. Back on the road!
