Kizashi Power Loss Linked to Faulty Exhaust Sensor

My car started acting up with check engine light and noticeable power loss lately. Also burning way more fuel than usual. Mechanic visit last time was pretty disappointing, so looking for advice before going back. Reading up online points to possible exhaust temperature sensor issues. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Car details: 2000 Suzuki Kizashi, gas engine, 197768 km. Any tips on what to look for or experiences dealing with exhaust sensor problems would be great.

Had similar issues with a 2003 Suzuki Swift GT with comparable symptoms. The exhaust system developed a leak near the manifold, causing incorrect readings from the exhaust temperature sensor. This triggered the check engine light and affected the fuel mixture. The temperature fluctuation from the faulty sensor made the engine computer inject more fuel than necessary, explaining the increased fuel consumption. Initially thought it was just a sensor replacement job, but inspection revealed cracks in the exhaust manifold gasket. The complete repair involved replacing both the heat sensor and related exhaust components. This was a serious issue since continued operation could have led to catalytic converter damage. The symptoms match your description, power loss occurs because the engine computer gets incorrect data and runs rich fuel mixture as a safety measure. Suggest getting a proper diagnostic scan and visual inspection of the entire exhaust system, focusing on the area around the temperature sensor. Look for any obvious exhaust leaks, especially near connection points and gaskets. The hissing sound during acceleration often indicates a leak in the exhaust system. These sensor-related issues typically dont fix themselves and tend to get worse over time, affecting both performance and fuel economy.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I went through something very similar with my Kizashi a few months back. The engine management system was acting crazy and the emission control readings were way off. Got it fixed and running smoothly now. Can you recall what the total repair cost was in your case? Also wondering if you had any other issues pop up after the exhaust system repair? Been a bit paranoid about keeping an eye on my temperature readings since my repair.

After getting the car properly checked, the mechanic confirmed it was indeed a faulty exhaust temperature sensor causing the issues. The entire repair came to 265€, which included fixing a leak in the exhaust system that was affecting sensor readings. The engine management system has been working perfectly since the repair, with no irregular temperature readings or emission control problems. Fuel consumption returned to normal levels, and the engine power is back to where it should be. No additional exhaust component issues have surfaced in the months following the fix. A proper diagnostic scan was key to pinpointing the exact problem. The sensor replacement and exhaust repair resolved all the symptoms completely, no more check engine light, proper fuel economy, and consistent power delivery. Regular monitoring shows all exhaust parameters staying within normal ranges. For peace of mind regarding temperature readings, most modern engine management systems will quickly alert you if there are any sensor-related problems, so no need for excessive worry if everything is running smoothly now.

Finally got this sorted and wanted to share my experience. Took the car to a different mechanic who actually listened to the symptoms. They did a full diagnostic scan and found exactly what you mentioned, problems with the exhaust temperature sensor and a small leak in the exhaust system. Total repair cost was 310€, bit steep but worth every cent. They replaced the faulty sensor and fixed the exhaust component issues. The difference in performance was immediate, power came back, fuel consumption dropped to normal, and the check engine light cleared up. Been running great for about 3 weeks now. Engine performance is spot on and fuel economy is back to normal. Really glad I got a second opinion instead of letting the first mechanic guess at the problem. No more temperature fluctuation issues and the exhaust system is working perfectly. Definitely learned my lesson about finding a mechanic who takes the time to do proper diagnostics.
