Kona Anti-Theft Alarm Malfunction

Hey, my 2018 Hyundai Kona with a gasoline engine is acting up. The anti-theft alarm system seems to be malfunctioning. I'm getting an error stored in the error memory, and the alarm itself isn't working. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Hyundai Kona owner reported a malfunctioning anti-theft alarm system, with an error stored in the error memory and the alarm not functioning. The issue was suspected to be related to the alarm control module, possibly involving the immobilizer or incorrect coding causing the indicators to activate improperly. The suggested solution was to have the system diagnosed and recoded by a professional, which ultimately resolved the problem by clearing the error memory and correcting the alarm system coding.

Greetings. It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with your Kona's alarm control module. The symptoms you describe, specifically the error memory and non-functional alarm, could indicate a few potential problems. Have you noticed any other electrical issues, such as the indicators flashing erratically or a rapidly draining battery? It is also possible that there is a problem with the immobilizer, a security feature that prevents the car from starting without the correct key. This could manifest as starting problems or the alarm being triggered inadvertently. Any further details you can provide would be helpful.

Thanks for the info. No other electrical issues that I've noticed, and the battery seems fine. What do you mean by the indicators flashing erratically?

By erratic indicator flashing, I mean the hazard lights or turn signals activating without driver input, often associated with alarm triggers. Given you're not experiencing that, the issue might be specifically related to the alarm system being coded to activate optical locking (indicators), which is malfunctioning. Ultimately, diagnosing alarm system faults often requires specialized tools and diagnostic equipment. While I can offer general advice, I would suggest taking it to a qualified workshop where they can properly diagnose the issue. It is, in my experience, often more cost-effective to seek a professional opinion than attempting potentially complex electrical repairs yourself.

Appreciate the advice. Took it to the workshop, and you were right. The alarm system was coded to activate the indicators, and that was causing the error. Recoding the system and clearing the error memory fixed it. Cost me 45€.
