Kubistar EVAP leak and stalling

My 2003 Nissan Kubistar with a gasoline engine has a check engine light and stalls when idling, especially when cold. It has 246101 km. My OBD scanner points to an EVAP system leak. I've checked the fuel cap. Could a defective activated charcoal filter cause this?

A faulty charcoal canister/filter is a common cause of EVAP system leaks and those symptoms. Does it affect fuel efficiency as well? If so, I would check the filter.

I think fuel efficiency has decreased a bit lately. Can I test the charcoal filter myself, or does it require special equipment? Is it safe to keep driving with this issue?

Testing it properly usually needs smoke testing gear. Driving with it isn't dangerous, but the stalling could be a nuisance, and you are polluting more than you should. A workshop should diagnose it quickly. I'd recommend getting it checked soon. It could very well be the filter itself.

I took it to a local mechanic. They did a smoke test and confirmed it was the charcoal filter. Repair cost was 275€ including parts and labor. The engine light is now off, and the car runs great again.
