Kuga auto transmission fault
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Ford Kuga diesel exhibited an auto transmission park position fault, preventing the engine from starting and causing erratic gearbox shifts, with the Check Engine Light illuminated. The suspected cause was a defective control unit. A similar issue was reported by another owner, who suggested checking the transmission sensor, park brake switch, and neutral position sensor. Ultimately, replacing the control unit resolved the problem.

Thanks. Was your Kuga showing the same error codes? Did you have trouble starting in neutral as well, or just park?

Yes, the error codes indicated a transmission fault, and the starting problem only occurred in park. It might be prudent to have a workshop perform a diagnostic check. It sounds remarkably similar to the issue I experienced.

Thanks for the info. It was indeed a defective control unit as suspected. Replaced it and all is well. 1000€ lighter, but back on the road.

I own a Kuga and had similar symptoms. Engine would not crank sometimes, Check Engine Light was on, and the transmission felt like it was slipping. Have you checked the transmission sensor and park brake switch? Could also be neutral position sensor.
