Kuga preheating lamp and check engine light

Hello, I'm having trouble with my 2018 Ford Kuga diesel. The preheating lamp won't switch off, and the check engine light is now on! Also, it's producing quite a bit of smoke when I accelerate. I've checked the glow plugs themselves, but they seem okay. Could it be something else?

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Ford Kuga diesel was experiencing issues with the preheating lamp not switching off, the check engine light being on, and excessive smoke during acceleration. The initial suspicion was a faulty glow control unit, possibly due to a loose or corroded cable and plug connection. After taking the vehicle to a workshop, it was confirmed that the problem was indeed a defective connection to the glow control unit, which was repaired, resolving the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! Sounds like a faulty glow control unit, maybe? The symptoms definitely point in that direction, especially with a diesel. Have you checked the cable and plug connection of the control unit? Sometimes a loose or corroded connection can cause these issues. What's the mileage on your Kuga?

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, the mileage is 153969 km. I haven't specifically checked the cable and plug connection of the control unit itself. Where exactly is it located, and is it something I can easily inspect myself, or should I leave it to a professional?

Okay, with that mileage, it's quite possible the connection is the culprit. It's usually near the engine, but honestly, pinpointing it without proper tools and knowledge can be tricky. Considering the engine light and smoke, and your initial glow plug check being okay, I strongly suggest taking it to a workshop. A defective glow control unit can cause incomplete combustion and damage over time. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – it was indeed a defective cable/plug connection to the glow control unit. They fixed it for 95€, and now everything is working perfectly again! Really appreciate the help!
