Lacetti headlight range control fault

I have a 2008 Chevrolet Lacetti with a diesel engine. I'm experiencing a fault with the headlight range control. The error is stored, and a warning light is on. The low beam either shines too far down or up, seemingly randomly. The car has 183735 km on the clock. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

The 2008 Chevrolet Lacetti experienced a fault with the headlight range control, causing the low beam to shine incorrectly and triggering a warning light. The issue was likely due to a malfunction within the headlight range control system, potentially involving a defective servomotor or control module. After consulting a workshop, it was confirmed that the problem was a defective servomotor, which was repaired, resolving the issue.

The symptoms you describe strongly suggest a problem within the headlight range control system itself. The fact that the low beam shines incorrectly, coupled with the error code and warning light, points to a malfunction. It could be a defective servomotor in one or both headlights, preventing proper beam adjustment. Have you checked the wiring harness and connectors leading to the headlights and the control module? Sometimes a loose connection or corroded terminal can cause these issues. Also, have you tried manually adjusting the headlights to see if that has an effect?

Thanks for the input. I haven't checked the wiring harness or connectors yet, but I did try manually adjusting the headlights. It didn't seem to make any difference. When you mention the control module, are you referring to the body control module (BCM), or is there a separate module specifically for headlight range control?

Yes, it's plausible the BCM is involved, but there's also a dedicated headlight range control module in many vehicles. Its job is to interpret signals from sensors and adjust the servomotors in the headlights. Since manual adjustment had no effect, it does increasingly sound like a defective servomotor or the control module itself. Given the complexity and the potential for misdiagnosis, it would be wise to have a workshop take a look at it. They have the proper diagnostic tools to pinpoint the fault.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were right. It was a defective servomotor in the headlight. The repair cost me 1040€. Now everything works again.
