Lafesta belt handover issue
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Nissan Lafesta owner reported a malfunction with the belt handover, suspecting the belt tensioner as the issue. The problem was characterized by a loud squealing noise, indicating a potential failure of the tensioner. It was suggested to check the idler pulley and belt alignment as well. Ultimately, the owner opted for professional repair, confirming the tensioner was faulty, and resolved the issue with a shop visit.

Yeah, that's what I meant. It sounds pretty awful, a nasty squeal. Alignment seems fine, but I'll double-check the idler pulley. If it's definitely the tensioner, is it a DIY job or am I better off taking it to a shop?

Squeal points towards tensioner. The handover failing seals it. DIY might be possible if you're mechanically inclined and have the right tools (torque wrench is a must!), but honestly, for 455€ (parts + labor) I'd let a pro handle it. Messing with belt tension can be surprisingly dangerous. You can easily overtighten. Save yourself the hassle and potential damage.

Cheers! You were spot on. Confirmed tensioner was shot. Bit the bullet and took it to a shop. Cost me 455€ as you predicted. Runs like a charm now. Thanks for the advice!

Belt handover? You mean when the serpentine belt tensioner automatically adjusts? A bad belt tensioner on those Nissans can sound like a flock of angry birds under the hood. Squealing, chirping, the whole symphony of doom. Is that what you're hearing? Check your idler pulley too, while you're at it. Is the belt properly aligned? Maybe post a video?
